Authorities stationed at the Lebombo border crossing successfully intercepted a minibus taxi on Friday, rescuing 14 undocumented children who were being smuggled into South Africa from Mozambique.
The children, aged 4 to 14 years, were immediately placed in the care of the Department of Social Development, according to the Border Management Authority.
“The individual has been charged with facilitating and aiding illegal entry, as per the stipulations of the Immigration Act,” Mogotsi stated.
Separate Incident at Beitbridge Border
In another interception on Saturday, eight Bangladeshi nationals were detained at the Beitbridge border as they attempted to enter South Africa without the proper travel documentation. Officials revealed that the group had been dropped off near the border by another minibus taxi.
“These incidents shed light on the persistent challenges posed by criminal networks exploiting South Africa’s borders,” explained BMA Commissioner Michael Masiapato.
