In Philippolis, Free State, a 22-year-old man was stabbed todeath after an argument over a mere R5 coin escalated into deadly violence. The suspect, also aged 22, has been apprehended and is facing a serious charge of murder.
The incident unfolded around 1:00 AM at a tavern, during what was supposed to be a friendly pool game between the two men.
The tension between the two quickly escalated, resulting in the suspect allegedly shattering a bottle before using it to stab the victim in the neck. The victim, gravely injured, stumbled out of the tavern and collapsed on the pavement just outside the premises.

Man stabbed to death over R5 Pool money

Upon arrival, the police found the victim’s lifeless body lying on the pavement. Authorities immediately began their investigation into the incident, opening a murder case. The swift cooperation of the local community played a crucial role in locating the suspect, who was eventually arrested.
Suspect to Appear in Court
Sergeant Xuma confirmed that the 22-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear before the Philippolis Magistrate’s Court in the coming days, where he will face charges of murder. The community and local authorities are awaiting the proceedings, and the case has garnered significant attention due to the senseless nature of the crime.
A similar Tragic Incident in Rietvlei
In a separate, unrelated case, a man named Retshidisitswe Lebojoa was sentenced to 28 years in prison by the Southern Gauteng High Court for the murder of Lehlogonolo Mothapi. The crime occurred after a confrontation at a tavern in Rietvlei in September 2022.
Bystanders initially broke up the altercation between the two men, but tragedy struck when Lebojoa followed Mothapi and his friend outside the tavern. Armed and accompanied by an unknown accomplice, Lebojoa opened fire, shooting Mothapi multiple times and leaving him dead at the scene.
