Two Mass Shootings Leave 27 Dead In South Africa Within Hours

At least 27 people have been killed in two separate mass shootings in South Africa within a matter of hours, with heavily armed gunmen opening fire at drinking venues in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The first attack happened at around 9:30pm on Saturday, 26 September 2026, when eight gunmen armed with assault rifles reportedly stormed a tavern in Wedela, on Johannesburg’s West Rand.

The attackers opened fire on people who were drinking outside before reportedly moving into the tavern and continuing the shooting.

Seventeen people were killed in the Johannesburg attack, while another 15 were wounded and taken for medical treatment.

According to the IOL report, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that the victims included 13 males and four females.

Police were still investigating the motive at the time of the report.

“The motive for the shooting was still unknown,” police said.

The gunmen reportedly torched two vehicles before fleeing the scene.

Cape Town Shisanyama Attack Leaves 10 Dead

While investigations were still unfolding in Johannesburg, another deadly shooting occurred in Cape Town during the early hours of Sunday, 27 September.

Gunmen opened fire at a shisanyama (braai venue) in Lwandle, killing 10 people and injuring 11 others.

Five victims were declared dead at the scene. The remaining five reportedly died from their injuries while being transported to hospital.

The second attack brought the confirmed death toll from the two shootings to at least 27.

Police had not announced any arrests in either case when the report was published.

The circumstances surrounding the Cape Town shooting, including the number of attackers and their motive, were also still being investigated.

South Africa Faces Fresh Mass Shooting Crisis

The two incidents have once again highlighted the continuing threat posed by gun violence in South Africa.

The attacks happened against a wider backdrop of efforts by authorities to tackle violent crime in areas affected by shootings and gang-related violence.

IOL reported that soldiers were deployed to crime hotspots in Johannesburg in March 2026 to support police operations. The deployment followed concerns about persistent violent crime.

The South African military has also previously assisted police operations in Cape Town’s gang-affected areas.

In 2019, about 1,300 soldiers were deployed to parts of the Cape Flats as authorities attempted to tackle gang violence.

Despite those interventions, shootings remain a serious security concern.

The latest attacks are also separate from an ongoing investigation into the deaths of women in the Ekurhuleni area.

Police announced on Sunday that a suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the killing of a woman whose body was discovered in a cemetery.

The woman was reportedly found semi-naked and had suffered severe injuries.

Police had offered a R400,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or people responsible for a series of killings in the area.

The two mass shootings in Johannesburg and Cape Town remain separate investigations, with police working to establish the motives, identify the attackers and determine whether anyone else was involved.

For now, the combined death toll stands at at least 27, while 26 people were reported injured in the two attacks.

The developments were reported on Sunday, 27 September 2026, as investigations continued.
