In a move that has captured the nation’s sympathy, beloved actress Gcina Mkhize, famed for her work on television dramas like Isibaya, has publicly reached out to President Cyril Ramaphosa. Her mission is a profoundly personal one: to find her long-lost father, Advocate Bongani Christopher Majola, the former head of the South African Human Rights Commission. The emotional appeal comes as the star faces a dire personal crisis that threatens the roof over her head.

The glitter of celebrity life has faded for Mkhize, who now confronts a harsh reality. In a formally written letter to the Presidency, the actress revealed that she is embroiled in a legal dispute that she cannot fight alone. Without the financial means for a robust legal defence, she and her young children face the terrifying prospect of being evicted from their home. It is this desperation that has forced her to seek out a father she has not spoken to in more than two decades. She wrote to the president,

“I am facing a critical situation that requires his attention and support. Without access to quality legal representation, my children and I are at risk of becoming homeless.”

Two Decades of Silence and a Final Hope

Mkhize’s attempts to bridge the twenty-year gap have been met with silence. She confided that her efforts to contact Advocate Majola through his wife and former professional contacts have yielded no results. With her legal troubles mounting and all private avenues exhausted, she has turned to the highest office in the land as a final resort. In her letter, she appealed directly to the President’s own principles, writing, “As a respected leader and advocate for justice, I believe you understand the importance of family and the impact that a prolonged absence can have on one’s life.” She added, “I implore you to consider my plea… and assist in locating my father or guiding me on the next steps to take.”

Waiting for an Answer and Reflecting on the Past

Speaking to the press, the actress confirmed she is anxiously waiting for any response from the Presidency, having submitted her plea at the start of the week. This is not the first time she has felt the need for her father’s support during a difficult period. She revealed that a similar need arose back in 2020, but he remained distant.

This history adds a layer of poignancy to her current situation. The man she is so desperately seeking is no ordinary figure; Advocate Majola is a seasoned human rights lawyer who not only led the SAHRC until 2022 but also held significant international posts with the United Nations, making his public disappearance from his daughter’s life all the more striking.
