Renowned actress Nirvana Nokwe-Mseleku, known for her roles in “Outlaws” and “Red Ink,” recently shared that she was violated while shooting a controversial scene involving rape and consent.

The discussion comes in the wake of Skeem Saam’s recent storyline about these sensitive topics, which has sparked conversations about the complexity of consent and boundaries in both real and fictional contexts.

Through social media, Nokwe-Mseleku expressed her thoughts on how society continues to struggle with understanding consent, citing her own unsettling experience during a recent project.

Actress recounts how she was violated on set

Nokwe-Mseleku had been filming for Showmax’s “Red Ink,” where she worked alongside actor Bonko Khoza. The incident in question took place during a night shoot, an environment where professionalism and respect should be paramount. Unfortunately, this was not the case, as the actress explained. She recounted how the scene had been rehearsed multiple times, ensuring that the violence would be implied through camera angles rather than actual physical contact.

Despite the agreed-upon choreography, which involved the co-star pushing her character onto a car bonnet and laying on her back, the scene was supposed to end with a close-up shot of Nokwe-Mseleku’s face, implying the assault. However, during the final take, her co-star disregarded the established guidelines.

Despite her objections, the scene continued, leaving Nokwe-Mseleku feeling violated, not just physically but emotionally and professionally. The entire experience left her shaken and deeply unsettled.

The Aftermath and Request for Therapy

Nokwe-Mseleku sought therapy and a written apology after the incident. Therapy was eventually agreed upon, along with a mediated meeting to address the issue. However, the actress described the mediation as hostile, filled with gaslighting and intimidation, which ultimately led to no significant action being taken.

Determined to seek justice, Nokwe-Mseleku decided to take the matter to the authorities. However, her attempt to file a formal complaint was met with further frustration.

“I was redirected to five different police stations, which was incredibly disheartening. It seemed like no one wanted to handle the case.”
