Adulting Actor Nhlanhla Kunene Opens Up on the Challenges of Potraying Tlof Tlof Scenes
Nhlanhla Kunene has opened up about the complexities of portraying tlof tlof scenes in his latest project, Adulting.
He portrays the the role of Eric on Adulting—a resourceful tsotsi who steals cars to support his family. The role which includes intimate scenes pushed the actor out of his comfort zone.
Hesitation and the Weight of Vulnerability
Speaking to the DailySun, Nhlanhla admitted that the explicit nature of some scenes initially made him hesitant to accept the role on Adulting.
“Yes, at first, I hesitated. Those scenes stay online forever, and people get fixated on them, overshadowing your other work,” Kunene shared.
Ultimately, he saw the role as a chance to grow in his craft.
“To be a true storyteller, you have to give your all without compromising your craft,” he added.
Balancing Personal and Professional Boundaries
Kunene emphasized the importance of maintaining a clear boundary between his personal life and his on-screen persona. He acknowledged the public’s potential misconceptions but remains focused on his art.
“You can’t control how people perceive you. I remind myself that what they see isn’t real—it’s acting. Ngiyakholwa mina (I’m a believer), and acting is a mental discipline,” Kunene explained.
He also noted that avoiding social media helps him shield himself from negative comments that could disrupt his process.
The Role of Trust and Preparation
Kunene credited workshops and open communication for creating a safe environment while filming intimate scenes. He highlighted the value of trust among cast members, saying:
“Trust is everything, especially for intimate scenes. We have workshops where we discuss boundaries, like green and red zones, to ensure everyone feels safe.”
He explained how such preparation not only fosters comfort but also improves the authenticity of performances.
“Open communication before and during filming builds trust, which enhances performance.”
