Amanda du Pont Donates R100,000 to Women for Change Ahead of National Shutdown

Actress Amanda du Pont has thrown her weight behind the upcoming Women’s Shutdown, donating a substantial R100,000 to advocacy group Women for Change.

The shutdown, set for November 21, aims to spotlight South Africa’s ongoing gender-based violence (GBV) crisis.

Women Urged to Turn Social Media Purple

Women for Change has called on citizens—particularly women and girls—to change their social media profile pictures to purple in solidarity with GBV victims. The organisation is also pushing for GBV to be declared a national disaster as the country continues to lose an estimated 15 women every day to femicide.

The shutdown will include a nationwide 15-minute standstill at 12pm on Friday, coinciding with the eve of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg. The act is intended to bring women together in remembrance and protest.

Amanda du Pont’s Message: “We Stand With You”

According to TimesLive, through her skin care brand, Lelive, Amanda made the six-figure contribution while emphasising that violence affects people across genders and ages.

“I just want to acknowledge that this happens across all genders and to children as well. There are some incredible men behind the movement, so we are no longer standing alone and we welcome our entire community to stand with us. To whoever has been affected, we stand and fight for you too,” she said.

Women for Change Founder in Tears Over Record Donation

Women for Change founder Sabrina Walter expressed deep gratitude, saying Amanda’s contribution is the largest the organisation has ever received.

“I am crying seeing this. This is the largest donation we have ever received and knowing that it came from such a beautiful, courageous woman makes it even more meaningful. I am so proud of you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart,” she said.
