Tyla has made history again as the first South African artist to win an MTV Video Music Award. On Wednesday, 11 September, the global star secured the 2024 MTV VMA in the Best Afrobeats category for her smash hit, ‘Water,’ during the ceremony at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

Over the last few days, she has been in the news, not for her historic win for South Africa, but for her confidence.

Lil Nas X and Little Mermaid star Halle Bailey announced Tyla as the winner in the Best Afrobeats category. An overwhelmed Tyla received her award from Lil Nas X and joked that she wasn’t strong enough to hold it. She asked for help, and Lil Nas X stepped forward. Despite being closer to Tyla, Bailey smiled and didn’t take the award, leaving the “Water” hitmaker to continue her speech.

During the speech, Tyla explained to the audience that African music is diverse and should not just be bundled as “Afrobeats”.

It appears her confidence and self-worth are raffling Americans. One US artist took to X to express his disdain for Tyla.

Armon Wiggins said:

“Hey, I don’t think I like TYLA’s personality. I think someone needs to check her cus she doesn’t understand American Culture AT ALL…She almost gives off entitled or uppity African, idk how to explain it, but it’s very off-putting, and it’s almost like she expects people to just fall to her feet.”

Tyla’s fans, the Tygers, Africans and people who adore her would not let Wiggins get away with his hate.

Phumzil Van Damme:

“Cope harder.

Love,
An Uppity African.”

Mwirigi:

“uppity African” eh?

Y’all are the Whites of black people

Kenny:

“Cry today, cry tomorrow, cry forever.”

Jonny:

“She gave knowledge and insight into her culture and not to generalize all African music as Afrobeat, and this is what you got from that?”

Goofy:

“Doesn’t understand American Culture” idk maybe cause she isn’t American? Do u understand South African Culture?
