A MURDERED ANC Youth League deputy chairman has been described as a humble young leader who had the potential to reach great heights.

Wandile Ngubeni (28), of the Emalahleni branch of the youth league, was killed by unknown gunmen on Sunday night.

He was at the Ekasi Food Court and Lodge in Section 1 of Newcastle, KZN when the shooting took place.

Mafika Mndebele, who was with Wandile during the incident, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.

A friend said: “I didn’t expect Wandile to die in such a brutal manner.

“He always had solutions for all our problems,” said the friend.

She said Wandile and a group of fellow youth league members were at the Ekasi Food Court when the murder took place.

“I heard it wasn’t a serious meeting.

“At this point, we have no idea what the motive for the killing could have been,” she said.

The KZN ANC Youth League issued a statement calling for a task team to handle the investigations.

“We call on MEC for community safety Willies Mchunu to assemble a special task team to investigate the matter.”

Mchunu urged anyone with information about the murder to report it to the police.

“The police have been ordered to work around the clock to bring the perpetrators to book as soon as possible.

“We need to get to the bottom of this matter,” said the MEC.

KZN police spokesman, Major Shooz Magudulela, confirmed the incident.

“The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while the injured man was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

“The motive for the killing is unknown at this stage.

“Police are investigating cases of murder and attempted murder.

“No arrests have been made yet.”
