Barberton Mother and Son Shot Dead in House Robbery, Teen Suspect Hospitalised After Mob Justice

A teenager accused of murdering a mother and her son during a violent house robbery in Barberton, Mpumalanga, is under police guard in hospital.

The 19-year-old girl, was attacked by angry community members who intended to burn her after the brutal murders. She was rescued by police and is now receiving treatment.

Family Targeted in Shooting

Provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane revealed to IOL that officers were alerted to a house robbery on Monday.

According to the report, police received a complaint about a house robbery in which multiple family members had been shot. Upon arrival at the hospital, medical staff directed officers to three patients who had sustained gunshot wounds,” Ndubane explained.

Sadly, a 43-year-old woman and her 24-year-old son later died from their injuries. The family’s youngest daughter remains in hospital receiving treatment.

Community Attack on Suspect

News of the murders quickly sparked outrage in the neighbourhood. Police confirmed that furious community members turned on the 19-year-old suspect and attempted to set her alight.
“Fortunately, police arrived in time to intervene and rescue the suspect. She is currently hospitalized and under police guard. She faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and housebreaking,” said Ndubane.

No arrests have been made in relation to the mob attack, but investigations are ongoing.

Police Appeal for Information

Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward.

Police urge anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact Detective Captain Vusi Maphanga on 082 303 9704, or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111. Information can also be shared anonymously via the My SAPS App. All information will be treated with the strictest confidentiality,” Ndubane said.

Commissioner Condemns Mob Justice

Acting provincial commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi expressed concern about the increasing number of mob justice incidents in Mpumalanga. He appealed to communities to allow law enforcement to handle cases professionally.
