Beware of fake JMPD employment advert

Johannesburg, South Africa

The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has warned the public to be wary of a fake job advertisement that is currently in circulation on social media, offering employment. JMPD’s spokesperson Wayne Minnaar has since said there are currently no vacant positions at the JMPD Academy.

With the current unemployment rate which is now hovering around the 30 percent mark many have fallen for these job scams.

However, this is not the first time that an incident like this has happened. Regardless, the JMPD has since said it is taking the matter seriously.

“The JMPD wants to alert the public of a fake advert which is currently on social media offering jobs to young people. However, these positions do not exist in JMPD. The JMPD Academy is currently training recruits and there are no other vacancies in the Academy. Those individuals behind this fake advert are being warned that the case is being investigated internally and by the SAPS and they will be arrested and will be charged for fraud,” said the JMPD spokesperson.

The job scammers usually charge applicants a certain fee ranging from R50 to R1 000 which is supposedly meant to exacerbate the process of recruitment.

Unfortunately many have parted away with their hard end money only to realise that they were scammed.

Young adults are usually the ones that fall victim to these type of scams due to desperation. Members of the public have since been advised not to pay for any job as this resorts to extortion.

However, with the current economic ripples that COVID-19 has brought the scammers will most likely intensify their presence preying on the vulnerable who will be desperate to get a job regardless of the type of conditions that will be placed before them.
