Big Zulu Biography


Big Zulu, whose real name is Siyabonga Nene, is a prominent South African rapper and songwriter. He rose to fame with the release of his hit single “Donsa Nkabi” in 2016.


Big Zulu’s musical journey was heavily influenced by his upbringing, where he was exposed to the sounds of Maskandi and Isichathamiya music. Artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemizi, and Imithente significantly shaped his musical aspirations. Before gaining recognition as a musician, he worked as a taxi driver.

In 2015, Big Zulu inked his first major music contract with Universal Music. This partnership led to the release of his debut album, “Ushun Wenkabi,” in 2018, featuring the platinum-selling single “Vuma Dlozi.” His second album, “Ungqongqoshe Woongqongqoshe,” followed in 2019.

The album included the chart-topping single “Ama Million,” which peaked at number 5 on the iTunes chart. It also earned a nomination at the South African Music Awards in 2020. He continued his success with the hit single “Mali Eningi,” featuring the late South African rapper Riky Rick and Intaba Yase Dubai.

Big Zulu’s influence extends beyond his own music. He founded Inkabi Records, his own record label, which has signed several artists, including South African singer Mduduzi Ncube.


Big Zulu’s talent has not gone unnoticed, as he has received numerous accolades throughout his career. Some of the prestigious awards he has won include Album of the Year, Song of the Year (“Mali Eningi”), Best Music Video, Best Male and Ubuntu Activism Award, Best Collaboration, and Best Digital Sales at the 2021 South African Hip Hop Awards.

Personal Life

Big Zulu is in a relationship with Lebogang Makenete, with whom he shares a daughter. However, their relationship has faced its share of challenges. In 2018, Gauteng police arrested Zulu for allegedly assaulting his baby mama.

During a period of separation, Zulu had an affair with PR guru Bulelwa Nazo, which resulted in the birth of another child, a son named Shaka.


Big Zulu was born on April 7, 1986, in Bergville, South Africa.

Acting Career

In addition to his music career, Big Zulu has made a name for himself in the acting world. He has appeared in popular South African TV series such as Isibaya, One Mic, and Uzalo.
