Brazilian National Arrested at OR Tambo with R8.7 Million Cocaine Haul
South African police have arrested a Brazilian national at OR Tambo International Airport after discovering cocaine worth R8.7 million concealed in the suspect’s luggage.
The 26-year-old was apprehended on Sunday afternoon shortly after arriving in the country from Brazil.

Intelligence Operation Leads to Bust
According to police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe, the arrest followed an intelligence-driven operation targeting suspected drug traffickers passing through the airport.
Officers conducted a search of the suspect’s luggage upon arrival and reportedly uncovered multiple blocks of cocaine that had been carefully wrapped and hidden.
Focus on Drug Trafficking Networks
Authorities say the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts to dismantle transnational drug trafficking syndicates using South Africa’s busiest airport as an entry point.
According to IOL, police have recorded several recent successes at OR Tambo, with operations aimed at intercepting narcotics and disrupting the flow of illegal drugs into the country.
Court Appearance Set
The suspect is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 28, facing charges related to drug trafficking.
Arrests Highlight Growing Trend
The latest bust comes weeks after another major operation at the airport, where five South African women were arrested in March for allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs worth more than R5 million.
The suspects in that case were intercepted while preparing to board a flight believed to be headed to China via Dubai, highlighting the international scope of trafficking networks operating through the airport.
Continued Crackdown
Police say intensified intelligence-led operations will continue as authorities work to curb organised crime and prevent South Africa from being used as a transit route for illicit substances.
Officials have reiterated their commitment to strengthening border security and targeting individuals involved in drug trafficking activities.
