South African football legend Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe, has died at the age of 75.
Moripe passed on at his home in Atteridgeville after years of battling health issues that confined him to a wheelchair. he suffered a stroke a few years ago.
Football Legend Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Has Died
Football authority and founder of Soccer Laduma, Peter du Toit confirmed:
“Lucas “Masterpiece” Moripe passed away yesterday. He was an unbelievable dribbler of the ball. Without a doubt one of the most gifted players ever in our country. I was privileged to have played against him. He scored one of the greatest goals ever at Orlando v British XI RIP⚽️”

A Towering Figure In Soccer
Moripe, revered as “The God of Football,” was one of the most iconic players in the 1970s and 1980s. His skills and flair captivated fans, filling stadiums as he dazzled for Pretoria Callies in the National Professional Soccer League (NPSL).
In 1973, Moripe’s extraordinary talent earned him the prestigious Sportsman of the Year award after he starred in an NPSL Invitation XI match against a British All-Stars XI led by Rodney Marsh. This performance cemented his place in South African sports history.
Later in his career, he joined Orlando Pirates in 1981, where his contribution was limited due to persistent knee injuries. Despite his physical challenges, Moripe’s influence on the pitch and his legacy in the sport remained unmatched.
Beyond his football career, Moripe’s name became synonymous with excellence and community pride. In 2010, the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville was named in his honour. The stadium continues to serve as a monument to his contributions to South African football.

“Lucas Moripe was more than a player; he was an artist on the field,” a statement from Pretoria Callies read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.”
