Brown Mogotsi Survives Assassination Attempt in Vosloorus Shooting
Controversial and politically connected businessman Oupa “Brown” Mogotsi has survived an apparent attempted shooting in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg, on Monday night.
According to reports by SABC News, an unidentified gunman fired eight shots at a vehicle in which Mogotsi was travelling. He escaped without injuries.
SAPS Confirms Attempted Murder Case
SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the incident, saying,
“We have opened a case of attempted murder.”
Police investigators are said to be processing the scene for forensic evidence and working to establish the timeline of events. Mogotsi is expected to provide a formal statement to assist with ongoing investigations.
Madlanga Commission Confirms Shooting Involving Mogotsi
Jeremy Michaels, spokesperson for the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, also confirmed the incident, noting that it involved Mogotsi’s vehicle.
“I have spoken to Brigadier Athlenda Mathe very briefly and obviously I can’t get into too much of the details. She is on the scene in Vosloorus, from what I understand, and it does seem like there was a shooting incident involving Mr Mogotsi’s vehicle. But from what I understand, he is safe and he is unharmed,”
said Michaels.
The shooting has reportedly raised concerns among witnesses scheduled to testify before the Commission.
Businessman Linked to High-Profile Police Corruption Allegations
Mogotsi’s name has been repeatedly mentioned in investigations into alleged corruption, interference, and influence within the South African Police Service (SAPS).
He has been accused of meddling in police operations and allegedly bankrolling Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. In October, his business premises in the North West province were raided as part of ongoing probes into alleged misconduct and political interference.
The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where his name has frequently surfaced, is currently examining allegations of rot within the police service and connections between business figures and senior officials.
Investigations Ongoing
Police are continuing their investigations into the shooting, while Mogotsi’s camp has yet to issue an official statement.
Authorities have not confirmed whether the attack was targeted or politically motivated, but security analysts have suggested that the timing — amid ongoing corruption inquiries — may not be coincidental.
