76 Passengers Without Documents

A subsequent search of the bus revealed 76 Zimbabwean nationals on board, none of whom possessed valid passports or travel permits.

Police immediately arrested the 38-year-old driver and took the passengers into custody for processing.

Heavy Fine for Conveying Illegal Immigrants

The driver was charged with conveying illegal immigrants under Section 7(1)(g) read with Section 50(3), Regulation 39(4) of the Immigration Act.

He was handed a hefty fine of R1,140,000.

The bus, along with all the passengers, was escorted to the Beitbridge Port of Entry, where the Border Management Authority is handling further procedures.

Police Commissioner: Borders Will Be Secured

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, praised the swift response by law enforcement:

“This swift, coordinated action underscores our commitment to securing our borders. Let this serve as a strong message to those who continue to violate South Africa’s immigration laws,” she said.

The operation forms part of broader efforts to curb smuggling and irregular migration across the Limpopo River border.
