A ceiling collapsed at a primary school in Limpopo, injuring 20 pupils in the process.

The primary school in Giyani has been the scene of a distressing structural incident after a classroom ceiling gave way on Tuesday afternoon. The collapse occurred in a Grade 3 classroom at Dingamanzi Primary School shortly after pupils returned from their lunch break, resulting in injuries to twenty children.

Panic and Emergency Response

School staff reported hearing a tremendous crashing sound as the ceiling structure failed. Emergency protocols were activated immediately, with injured pupils initially transported to a local clinic for assessment.

Several were subsequently referred to a nearby hospital for more extensive medical evaluation. Officials have confirmed that none of the injuries are considered life-threatening, and all students have been released from medical care.

Parental Outcry and Demands for Action

In the wake of the incident, concerned parents have collectively withdrawn their children from the school. They are now demanding the immediate provision of mobile temporary classrooms, asserting that the building had previously been flagged as unsafe by government safety inspectors.

This claim has been directly contested by the Limpopo Department of Education. An official spokesperson stated that the affected building block was part of a recent renovation project and is less than six months old. The department maintains that the structure was deemed safe for use and that pupils were moved there temporarily to facilitate ongoing construction work in other parts of the school.
