Charlize Theron’s Claim That Afrikaans Is A ‘Dying Language’ Leaves South Africa Divided
Oscar award-winning South African-born actress Charlize Theron has caused such a stir on social media over her controversial Afrikaans claims.
The Snow White and the Huntsman actress opened up about her Afrikaans heritage on SmartLess podcast.
She, however, ruffled feathers when she claimed that Afrikaans was a dying language and that it wasn’t a helpful language.
There’s about 44 people still speaking it. It’s definitely a dying language; it’s not a very helpful language,” she said in the interview.
The Mad Max: Fury Road star who is an Afrikaans descent revealed that she didn’t speak English until she was around 19 and only focused on learning the language when she was in America. She said that it was easy for her to drop her South African accent because she was learning the English language from scratch.
“That’s why it was easy for me to drop the [South African] accent because I was really learning English from scratch,” she said.
Her sentiments caused such an uproar on social media as her claims divided South Africans’ opinions. While some agreed with Charlize’s analysis and concurred that it should be scrapped as an official South African language, others slammed her for lying that only 44 people speak Afrikaans.
