Minister Nzimande Exposes Unregistered University’s Honorary Doctorate Scandal After Actor Sello Maake kaNcube is Conferred with a Bogus Honorary Doctorate
The Minister of Higher Education, Blade Nzimande, has expressed concerns regarding Trinity International Bible University, stating that the institution is not registered and therefore lacks the authority to offer any qualifications.
This comes after renowned actor Sello Maake kaNcube received an honorary doctorate from the university, prompting questions about the legitimacy of the degree.
Social Media Celebration Raises Doubts
Over the weekend, Sello Maake kaNcube took to social media to celebrate his honorary doctorate. Alongside pictures, he quoted a Bible verse and expressed gratitude for the recognition.
“Look at God! It’s now Dr Sello Maake kaNcube Someone please tell my co-pilot Pearl Mbewe Maake KaNcube @Solopearl [wife] that she is no longer travelling this life journey with a national treasure only but with an honourable DR!” Sello Maake kaNcube wrote on social media platform X.
However, some social media users began questioning the validity of the honorary doctorate and the credibility of Trinity International Bible University.
Department of Higher Education Warns Trinity International Bible University
Speaking to The Sowetan, Minister Nzimande, on behalf of the Department of Higher Education and Training, revealed that Trinity International Bible University is not a registered private higher education institution. The department has corresponded with the university in the past, warning them about their illegal operations and urging them to regularize their activities. The Council on Higher Education (CHE) has also been consulted for guidance on the proper procedure for granting honorary qualifications.
Department Mulls Action Against Unregistered Institution
The Department of Higher Education and Training expressed deep concern over the persistent disregard for regulations exhibited by Trinity International Bible University. The department is considering taking comprehensive and decisive action against both the university and any individuals or institutions found to be undermining the department’s regulations. While the department seeks to engage with Trinity International Bible University and the celebrities who have received honorary degrees, the primary objective remains safeguarding the integrity of qualifications and the post-school education and training system.
