CUT Student Collapses and Dies During On-Campus Presentation
A Central University of Technology (CUT) student tragically died after collapsing in the middle of a class presentation at the institution’s Welkom Campus on Monday.
Tragedy During Presentation
The deceased student, identified as Ms. T.M. “Nonny” Tilo, was a fourth-year Bachelor of Education student. Witnesses say she was in the middle of her presentation when she suddenly collapsed. Despite attempts to assist her, she was later declared dead.
Ms. Tilo leaves behind a three-week-old baby, a detail that has deepened the sorrow surrounding her death.
University Mourns Loss
The Central University of Technology confirmed the tragedy in a statement, expressing its heartfelt condolences to Tilo’s family, friends, and classmates.
“The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) mourns the untimely passing of student Ms. T.M. Tilo and extends our deepest condolences to her family, friends, classmates and all those who were close to her during this difficult time,” the statement read.
Support and Memorial Arrangements
Following the incident, the university suspended academic activities on 30 September to allow the community time to grieve. Counselling and emotional support have been made available through the CUT Wellness Centre, led by the Dean of Students, Dr. Bernard Sebake.
CUT announced that academic activities will resume on Wednesday, 1 October, while a candlelight memorial service will be held on Thursday in honour of Ms. Tilo.
Investigation Underway
University management, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Pamela Dube and Welkom Campus Principal Dr. Joe Molete, met with student leaders and confirmed that a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Tilo’s death has begun.
The university reiterated its commitment to supporting both students and staff affected by the tragedy.
