Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn is under fire for his critical remarks about young cricketer Kwena Maphaka in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 17-year-old Maphaka, who made his debut for Mumbai Indians against Sunrisers Hyderabad, faced a tough introduction to the league, conceding 66 runs in his four-over spell. He came in for the injured Sri Lankan Dilshan Madushanka at the last moment.

Steyn, known for his fiery pace and aggressive bowling during his prime, took to social media to comment on Maphaka’s debut. His post, which some have perceived as overly harsh, read:

“Maphaka realizing the difference between U19 and the PRO league. Baptism of fire.”

This statement has sparked a debate on the appropriate way to mentor and critique young emerging talents in the sport.

Maphaka, a promising fast bowler from South Africa, had previously made headlines with his impressive performance in the ICC Under-19 World Cup. A successful tennis and hockey player, Maphaka is still in high school at St. Stithians, where Kagiso Rabada was. His transition to the IPL was highly anticipated, but his first outing proved to be challenging.

Critics argue that Steyn’s public criticism could be detrimental to Maphaka’s confidence and development as a player. They suggest that constructive feedback, especially for young players making their debut, should be provided in a more supportive and private manner.

Check out some of the backlash below.

Dikela:

“In your 30s, you couldn’t defend 12 runs in a World Cup. Leave the teenager out of your insecurities.”

Takalani:

“You still have time to delete this nonsense 🚮 You also started somewhere, and we supported you throughout.”

Rodney:

“That is very low of u.”

Tshepo:

“You know what’s disheartening about this tweet? All the bowlers were expensive, every single one of them in that match, but Dale Steyn chooses to single just one out, like he has never had such matches. Terrible.”

Sithale:

“Disappointed in Dale Steyn. Instead of cheering the young Kwena Maphaka, he decided to be weird.. the boy became the 3rd youngest overseas cricketer to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This is just the beginning of a brilliant career 🤝🏿”
