South Africa is mourning the death of Darlington Michaels, the beloved actor best known for his role as Georgie “Papa G” Zamdela on Isidingo.
The 82-year-old actor passed away Friday afternoon, 13 September, at his home after battling serious health issues in recent weeks.

Papa G had been admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto earlier this month, where he was treated for severe breathing difficulties. According to close sources, the veteran actor was struggling to breathe and had to be assisted with oxygen upon his arrival at the hospital. Despite receiving urgent medical care, his health continued to decline, leaving those around him concerned.
ZiMoja had reported last week that Michaels was not in good health, describing him as “under the weather” and in a fragile condition. While he received treatment at Baragwanath Hospital, he was discharged and returned home, only for his health to take a turn for the worse.
By Friday afternoon, the actor passed away. While many have been mourning his death, his family has yet to release a formal statement confirming the details.
Papa G had been dealing with ongoing medical issues for years. In 2013, he suffered a stroke while on a work trip to Cape Town, which greatly impacted his mobility. He spent several months recovering at Groote Schuur Hospital and, despite making a partial recovery, was left needing a walking stick to aid his mobility in the years that followed.
Aside from his respiratory struggles, sources revealed that Michaels had also been grappling with financial challenges after stepping away from the spotlight. His condition had reportedly affected his general well-being, making it difficult for him to move around freely or maintain his previously active lifestyle.
