Police Vehicle Crashes Into Wendy House
According to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), three SAPS members from Delft Police Station were driving along Sandlehout Street at around 6:30 p.m. when the accident happened.
“It is alleged that on 4/10/2025 at around 18h30, three SAPS members from Delft SAPS were driving a marked police vehicle on route to attend a complaint of murder in progress,” said IPID spokesperson Phaladi Shuping.
Shuping explained that the police vehicle swerved to avoid a taxi that was allegedly coming from the opposite direction and ended up crashing into a wendy house, hitting three children who were playing nearby.
One Child Killed, Two Injured
The 11-year-old girl died at the scene, while two other children, both aged 10, were rushed to hospital for treatment. Their current condition has not yet been disclosed.
The body of the deceased was later transported to Tygerberg Mortuary.
Police Vehicle Set Alight by Angry Residents
Following the crash, angry community members reportedly attacked the police officers and set their marked bakkie alight. Law enforcement had to intervene to restore order before IPID investigators could take over the scene.
“IPID took control of the crime scene after the situation was normalised and the community calmed down,” Shuping added.
IPID Opens Investigation
IPID has since confirmed that it is investigating a case of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving under Delft CAS 166/10/2025. Investigations into the events leading up to the crash are ongoing.
