John Steenhuisen is now the official leader of the country’s main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), following yesterday’s elective conference where he easily garnered more than 80 percent of the votes against his rival Mbali Ntuli.

Steenhuisen replaces the DA’s former leader, Mmusi Maimane, who resigned late last year over the party’s failure of standing by its core principles. Steenhuisen, who has also served as party chief whip in parliament said:

“The days of breaking South Africans are over. We are going back to the core principle of the DA which is liberalism. People are tired of being told what to do they want power and freedom this is what the DA will offer under my leadership.”

“We choose our leaders on the basis of their ideas, the content of their character and their potential to lead our party into new territory.”

Moreso, the former DA leader, Helen Zilla, was also elected the party’s Federal Chairperson. Upon her inauguration, Zilla quickly lambasted the issue of the current sporadic farm murders that are transpiring across the country. She said:

“They are now 40 000 commercial farmers left which are supposed to feed 57 million people. We need to take more stringent measures against these farm killings otherwise we will be left with no food abd the first thing is to fire Bheki Cele.”

Steenhuisen’s triumph will see him lead the DA in the 2024 presidential elections against the African National Congress (ANC), which has governed the country since the end of apartheid in 1994.
