Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reportedly survived a possible assassination attempt.
This comes after one of his official vehicles came under gunfire while en route home from an ANC national executive committee (NEC) meeting in Boksburg, Gauteng.
According to initial reports, the shooting occurred on the N12 highway, where the vehicle—part of the Deputy President’s convoy—was struck by bullets at least three times.

Spokesperson Confirms the Paul Mashatile’s Shooting Incident
Mashatile’s spokesperson, Keith Khoza, confirmed the alarming incident to City Press.
He revealed that the matter is now being investigated by the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Presidential Protection Unit (PPU).
“All we know is that the car was hit [by gunfire] after leaving the NEC meeting. The issue is currently being handled by the SAPS general responsible for presidential security services and the related arms of the police force,” Khoza said.

Security Detail Did Not Return Fire
Khoza further explained that the protection unit did not return fire during the shooting.
“Their immediate priority was ensuring the safety of the Deputy President,” he said.
Authorities have launched a joint investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and whether Mashatile was the intended target. No injuries have been reported.
Security Concerns Intensify
This incident comes amid growing concern over the safety of South Africa’s top officials.
Just months earlier, members of Mashatile’s security detail were involved in a widely publicised altercation on the N1 highway, during which civilians were assaulted.
The officers involved are facing both disciplinary and legal proceedings.
