DJ Maphorisa Reclaims Porsche and G-Wagon from Thuli Phongolo After Assault Charges
DJ Maphorisa, also known as Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, has reportedly repossessed the cars he bought for his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo, after being arrested for allegedly assaulting her in May of this year, according to a source close to the matter.
Background: Maphorisa’s Arrest and Bail
Last month, Maphorisa was granted R4,000 bail by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court for the alleged assault on the former Generations: The Legacy actress at her home in Sandton, Johannesburg. The court imposed a condition that Maphorisa should not have any direct or indirect communication with the complainant.
Maphorisa’s Decision to Retrieve the Cars
Following his release from custody, Maphorisa apparently requested a friend to retrieve the Mercedes G-Wagon and Porsche that he had purchased for Thuli Phongolo. The source indicated that Maphorisa made this decision in order to comply with the court’s bail conditions.
Alleged Trigger for the Incident
According to a statement given to the police by Thuli Phongolo, Maphorisa became aggressive during an argument and physically assaulted her. The statement claims that Maphorisa punched her on the chest and slapped her across the face. The argument allegedly stemmed from an incident the night before, where a man made advances towards Thuli and promised her a sum of R40,000.
Withdrawal Statement and Joint Statement
Although Thuli Phongolo filed a withdrawal statement the day after Maphorisa’s arrest, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) needed time to investigate before finalizing her plea. Prior to their first court appearance after Maphorisa’s release on bail, the couple issued a joint statement expressing their desire to handle the matter privately.
Postponement of the Assault Case
DJ Maphorisa’s court appearance on Wednesday, 5 July, resulted in another postponement of the case. The previous postponement occurred on 14 June due to the absence of state representatives during the proceedings. The case is now scheduled to be heard at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on 12 July.
