The DJ Sumbody murder trial has been delayed as the prosecution asked for more investigation time into the matter and facts.

The high-profile murder case involving the killing of renowned South African artist DJ Sumbody has been postponed for seven days to allow prosecutors to pursue new investigative leads.

Court Grants Prosecution Additional Time

During Tuesday’s proceedings at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, state prosecutors successfully requested a week-long delay in the trial against four individuals charged with the November 2022 murders.

The prosecution emphasised the need to verify recently uncovered information related to the case. The accused people were arrested recently after their connection to the high-profile murder were discovered.

Suspects Face Multiple Murder Charges

The four accused individuals include:

  • Michael Pule Tau
  • Tiego Floyd Mabusela
  • Musa Kekana
  • Sandton-based entrepreneur Katiso Molefe

These defendants stand accused of three counts of murder plus conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the fatal shooting of the musician (born Oupa Sefoka) and his two security personnel, Sibusiso Mokoena and Sandile Myeza.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Law enforcement officials maintain that the victims were deliberately ambushed in Woodmead, Johannesburg, where attackers unleashed a barrage of gunfire in what investigators describe as a premeditated assassination. The violent incident shocked South Africa’s entertainment industry and fans nationwide.

Bail Applications Pending

While three defendants (Tau, Mabusela, and Kekana) indicated they wouldn’t seek bail, businessman Molefe informed the court through legal representation of his intention to pursue bail. National Prosecuting Authority representative Phindi Mjonondwane confirmed the state’s position to contest any bail applications in the matter.

The case will resume following a seven-day postponement as authorities continue to build their prosecution strategy.
