Veteran actor Don Mlangeni Nawa’s wife opened up about his private struggle with prostate cancer which led to his heartbreaking demise.

The South African entertainment industry mourned as veteran actor Don Mlangeni Nawa was buried on Saturday in Johannesburg. The funeral ceremony occurred at the Germiston Civic Centre, where friends, family, and colleagues gathered to pay their respects.

Nawa, best known for his role in the popular TV series Isidingo, passed away on April 16, 2025, at 65 years old. During the emotional service, his wife shared previously unknown details about his health struggles.

Nawa’s widow disclosed that the actor had been privately fighting prostate cancer in a moving tribute. She described how despite watching her husband’s health decline, she felt supported by an outpouring of love from various quarters.

“Many stood by us during this difficult journey,” she said. “From government representatives to fellow artists and compassionate strangers, we never felt alone in this battle.”

The grieving wife explained that Nawa underwent multiple chemotherapy treatments with limited success.

“The first round of chemotherapy proved ineffective,” she revealed. “When we attempted a second treatment protocol, the cancer had become too aggressive, forcing doctors to halt the process prematurely.”

She described how medication side effects created a misleading appearance of improvement.

“The treatment caused severe water retention, making it seem like he was gaining weight when in reality, his condition was deteriorating.”

Community Support in Final Days

When conventional treatments failed, the family discovered an international medical protocol that provided temporary relief. “This discovery gave us precious additional time together,” his wife shared emotionally.

The medical costs forced her to leave her job to become a full-time caregiver.

“We faced significant financial strain until government officials intervened. The Premier assisted with the first round of specialized medication, while the Deputy Minister of Women, Children and Persons with Disabilities helped with subsequent treatments.”

She specifically acknowledged ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula for his personal support during her husband’s illness.

“His compassion and assistance meant everything to us in our darkest hours,” she said.

The tribute painted a picture of a beloved artist who faced his illness with quiet dignity, supported by a community that respected and admired him until the end.
