Former President Donald Trump has accused his predecessor Barack Obama of committing “treason” during the 2016 presidential election investigation.
“This was treason. They tried to steal the election through unprecedented means,” Trump declared, though intelligence assessments have consistently shown no evidence of vote manipulation.
Donald Trump Accuses Obama Of Treason
A spokesperson for the former Democratic president dismissed Trump’s claims as “ridiculous conspiracy theories” designed to distract from current political pressures.
The statement emphasised that multiple bipartisan investigations have validated Russia’s interference efforts while finding no evidence of political manipulation by Obama officials.

Complex Background of 2016 Election Controversy
The controversy stems from intelligence community findings that Russia engaged in social media manipulation and cyber operations during the 2016 campaign. While these efforts were found to favour Trump’s candidacy, multiple investigations concluded they didn’t alter vote outcomes.
A 2020 Senate Intelligence Committee report confirmed Russian attempts to influence the election through various channels, including connections with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the WikiLeaks organisation.
Trump’s History of Controversial Claims
The former Republican president has frequently promoted unverified theories about political opponents. Recently, he shared fabricated content depicting Obama’s arrest on his social media platform. Political analysts suggest these latest accusations represent an escalation of Trump’s longstanding pattern of targeting the former president.
The White House confrontation comes as Trump faces pressure from conservative supporters regarding the Jeffrey Epstein case, though he quickly pivoted to attacking Obama and Hillary Clinton when questioned about the matter.

Bipartisan Rejection of Trump’s Allegations
Current Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who previously led the Senate Intelligence Committee’s investigation into Russia, has publicly supported findings that contradict Trump’s claims. Democratic Representative Jim Himes called the treason accusation “a blatant falsehood” in a social media response.
Intelligence experts note that while procedural issues were identified in the 2017 assessment process, the core conclusions about Russian interference remain substantiated by multiple independent reviews.
