Cape Town residents yesterday roughed up a random thief who tried to steal the Rugby World Cup trophy during the Springboks tour.
The Springboks are revelling in the joy of South Africans, jubilant over last week’s Rugby World Cup victory. The Bokke narrowly edged bitter rivals New Zealand in a nailbiting encounter in Paris, France. The Springboks sealed their place as the greatest rugby nation after winning the Webb Ellis Cup for the fourth time.
The tour started in Pretoria before setting off to the Union Buildings in Johannesburg and Soweto on Thursday. Yesterday, they touched down in Cape Town, and today, they celebrate with the people of KwaZulu-Natal. The tour folds tomorrow in East London, the home province of captain Siya Kolisi.
In every street they passed, the Springboks were greeted by seas of green and gold screaming and cheering for them. The players hovering along the routes in an open tour bus were in a festive and merry mood with their families.

The multitudes of South Africans in the streets, however, have also attracted unruly elements amongst the public. One audacious thief saw a chance to strike gold, literally, and went for the kill.
He got his hands on the Webb Ellis Cup and attempted to vanish. In a video trending on X, one Springboks fan in a sightseeing bus saw him and zealously pointed the crowd to him.
Instantly, the people around circled him and snatched the trophy before briskly roughing him up. Watch the drama below.
