Transport officials in KwaZulu-Natal have issued an urgent travel advisory, calling on motorists to avoid the N2 corridor between Kokstad and Port Shepstone following a heavy snowstorm in Southern KZN that has blanketed the region.

The provincial Department of Transport has confirmed complete closure of the affected stretch as emergency crews work to clear the hazardous conditions.

Multiple Routes Affected by Winter Storm

“Public safety remains our top priority,” stated departmental spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya. “We’ve implemented full closures on both the N2 from Kokstad to Pietermaritzburg and the R603 Tacoma-to-Reit route until conditions improve.”

The decision comes after multiple commercial vehicles became stranded, creating dangerous traffic bottlenecks along the snow-covered highways.

Snowstorm Warning In KZN

Meteorological services have issued multiple Level 6 orange alerts for southern KZN, warning residents about three simultaneous threats: heavy snowfall, torrential downpours, and damaging wind gusts. Authorities emphasize these conditions create particularly hazardous driving environments, with reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces.

Officials Urge Public Cooperation

Transport representatives strongly discourage all non-essential travel to affected areas, including recreational trips by snow enthusiasts. “We’re appealing to the public’s good judgment – postponing travel plans could prevent life-threatening situations,” Sibiya emphasized. Emergency teams remain on high alert, coordinating response efforts with real-time weather data from the South African Weather Service.

Key Recommendations for Motorists:

  • Avoid all travel to Kokstad and surrounding regions until further notice
  • Monitor official weather and traffic bulletins for updates
  • Allow additional time for essential journeys in other parts of the province
  • Prepare for possible route diversions and delays
