DSTV To Sponsor The Premier Soccer League

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has announced its new sponsor and name.

DSTV is now the official sponsor of the PSL, formerly known as the Absa Premisership according to an announcement that was made by PSL chairperson Irvin Khoza.

The Premier Division of the PSL will be known as the DStv Premiership. MultiChoice, which operates DStv, already holds PSL broadcast rights through its sports channel SuperSport and also owns a team that plays in the league, SuperSport United.

Absa and the PSL ended their nearly 15-year partnership at the end of last season, opening the door for a new sponsor.

The announcement will most affect SABC the most as they are DSTV’s competitors. This will mean they have to mention DSTV Premiership when broadcasting their matches and also buy the licence from DSTV.

The new season is due to commence next month.

Twitter reactions to the new announcement varied.

Many people are excited to share their love of football and commitment as the new DSTV Premiership starts. Sundowns currently hold the PSL league cup. It remains to be seen which team will have their name written first on the DSTV Premiership trophy.
