South African police have launched a manhunt after 17 people were killed in two brutal mass shootings in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape.

The incidents occurred in the early hours of Saturday, September 27, leaving a small community in shock and mourning.

In the first attack, gunmen entered a home and shot dead 12 women and one man. Shortly after, in a nearby homestead, three women and one man were also gunned down.

A man who survived the attack is in critical condition at a hospital.

A two-month-old baby, fortunately, was unharmed. The two-month-old baby has been taken to the hospital for a medical checkup,” said police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.

Authorities have vowed to bring the killers to justice.

The South African Police Service has launched an extensive search to bring those responsible for these brutal killings to justice,” Mathe said.

She added:

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our communities.”

Forensic experts from Pretoria have been dispatched to the crime scenes to assist in the investigation. The exact motive for the killings remains unclear, but police are working around the clock to gather evidence and track down the perpetrators. Mathe confirmed that officers are doing everything possible to restore peace in the area and prevent further violence.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation.

The SAPS is working tirelessly to ensure that those responsible are apprehended and brought to justice,” Mathe added.

Meanwhile, the killings have sent shockwaves through the Lusikisiki community, with many residents expressing fear and uncertainty. Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, Deputy Minister Cassel Mathale, and SAPS National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola will update the media on the nationwide efforts to combat violent crime.

Police have heightened patrols in the area as they continue their search for suspects in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent Eastern Cape history.
