Controversial businessman Edwin Sodi is set to appear at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday for the commencement of his gender-based violence (GBV) trial. The case stems from allegations made by his estranged wife, Nthateng Lerata, who accused him of assaulting her and a male friend at their Bryanston residence in 2022.

Sodi, who was granted bail of R150,000, is now preparing to face the court as the first witness takes the stand. The trial marks a significant moment in a case that has drawn widespread attention due to Sodi’s high-profile status and previous legal troubles.

Background of the Edwin Sodi Court case

In 2022, Sodi spent a week in custody after Lerata filed charges against him. The allegations include attempted murder, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, pointing a firearm, and domestic abuse. Following his arrest, Sodi voluntarily surrendered to the authorities and was held in police custody until his bail was approved.

The incident reportedly occurred at the couple’s Bryanston home, where Lerata claims Sodi attacked her and her male friend. The case has since become a focal point in discussions surrounding gender-based violence in South Africa.

During his bail application, Sodi submitted an affidavit outlining his circumstances, professional background, assets, and his account of the events on the night in question. Magistrate Nielen Karrikan, presiding over the case, emphasized the seriousness of the charges, particularly in light of the ongoing national conversation about GBV.

Sodi’s bail conditions are stringent. He is prohibited from communicating or interfering with witnesses, either directly or indirectly. Additionally, he is required to remain at his residence and report his movements to the investigating officer. These measures aim to ensure the integrity of the trial and the safety of those involved.

Previous Legal Troubles

This is not Sodi’s first encounter with the law. In 2020, he was arrested in connection with the R255-million asbestos corruption case in the Free State and released on R500,000 bail. The ongoing GBV trial adds another layer of complexity to Sodi’s legal challenges, further tarnishing his public image.
