Former Skeem Saam star Thabo Masoga has revealed his dramatic career shift from television actor to bank security guard in Limpopo. The 53-year-old performer, once known for his powerful portrayal of landlord Ananius on the popular SABC1 drama, now protects a financial institution by day while living in modest accommodations.
A Life Rebuilt From Scratch
In an emotional interview, Masoga described losing nearly everything – multiple properties, six vehicles, and even close relationships.
“I’ve experienced firsthand how people disappear during hard times,” the actor shared. “Even family members distanced themselves when I needed support most.”
The multi-talented artist, who previously worked as a scriptwriter, director, and gospel musician, traces his difficulties to 2023 when his Skeem Saam character was gradually written out of the show.
“They asked me to contribute scripts, which seemed strange since I wasn’t part of their writing team. Shortly after, my role diminished until I stopped receiving calls altogether.”

Thabo Masoga loses assets

Masoga’s financial downfall included the loss of homes in Hammanskraal and Booysens, plus an impressive vehicle collection featuring luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW.
“While losing these possessions hurt deeply, I maintain faith in my comeback,” he stated. “History shows many successful people experience major setbacks before rising again.”
An Extensive Entertainment Career
Beyond his decade-long Skeem Saam tenure, Masoga appeared in numerous productions including e.tv’s Gold Diggers (2010), The River (2012), and Muvhango (2013). His writing credits include Mzansi Magic’s Bohwa Baka and Limpopo TV’s Tefeletso, The Vengeance – though he claims unpaid royalties from the latter.
Finding Dignity in New Beginnings
Now married with eight children, including a one-year-old daughter, Masoga embraces his security role without shame.
“I take pride in supporting my family, especially working in my hometown where people still recognize me,” he explained.
The actor recalled darker days collecting recyclables in Alexandra township, thankful to have moved beyond that chapter.

Masoga’s story serves as both a cautionary tale about entertainment industry volatility and an inspiring example of perseverance. As he puts it:
“Every job has dignity when it puts food on your family’s table.”
