Mthandeni Manqele, a celebrated Maskandi musician and winner of the prestigious Ingoma Ehlukanisa uNyaka competition, is facing serious allegations from a fan.

Dlamini claims that he opened a case against Manqele, but the police allegedly dropped the investigation without resolving the matter. The incident reportedly occurred on December 17, 2024, at KwaSthagimant Tavern in Chesterville, Durban.

Social Media Footage Sparks Outrage

A video clip that went viral on social media shows Manqele attacking Dlamini. The footage has sparked widespread outrage among fans and the public, raising questions about law enforcement handling the case.

Dlamini recounted the events to Sunday World, stating,

“I am a fan of Mthandeni and attended his performance that night. After his set, my friends and I approached him for pictures. I greeted him and used his nickname, ‘Dunudunu,’ which seemed to anger him. He suddenly ran towards me and started assaulting me.”

According to Dlamini, he attempted to flee, but Manqele and two of his crew members chased him down. “They punched and kicked me repeatedly. I was defenseless,” he added.

Medical Treatment and Police Report

Following the alleged assault, Dlamini sought medical treatment the next day. On December 19, he filed a formal complaint against Manqele at the Cato Manor police station. However, by the end of January, he was informed that the case had been closed.

“The investigating officer told me they couldn’t locate Mthandeni, so the case was dropped,” Dlamini explained. “I feel betrayed because Mthandeni is still performing publicly, and his whereabouts are well-known. It seems like the police are protecting him because he’s a celebrity.”

Manqele’s Response

When approached for comment, Manqele confirmed that he was in Durban on the date of the alleged incident but declined to elaborate.

“I can confirm that I was performing in Durban on that day. However, I cannot comment further as the matter is sub judice,” he stated.

Manqele’s Recent Success

Despite the controversy, Manqele has continued to enjoy professional success. In December 2024, he won the Ingoma Ehlukanisa uNyaka competition hosted by UKhozi FM, securing a new car as his prize. His victory was propelled by over 900,000 votes from fans, solidifying his status as one of the genre’s top artists.

Police Under Scrutiny

Colonel Robert Netshiunda, a spokesperson for the KwaZulu-Natal police, addressed the case’s closure but provided limited details.

“I am not privy to the specifics of why the case was closed. The investigating officer likely explained the reasons to the complainant. Beyond that, I cannot disclose further information,” he said.

The lack of transparency has fueled public skepticism, with many questioning whether Manqele’s celebrity status influenced the investigation’s outcome.

Fan Calls for Accountability

Dlamini remains determined to seek justice. “I am not giving up on this. Mthandeni must be held accountable for his actions. The police need to do their job and ensure that no one is above the law,” he asserted.
