Five alleged cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers met their death during a violent exchange of gunfire with law enforcement officers in Crown Mines, Johannesburg. Authorities recovered multiple firearms at the crime scene following the intense confrontation.

Gauteng Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni revealed that the successful operation resulted from carefully coordinated intelligence work between KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng police units. The tactical operation targeted a known criminal network specializing in armored vehicle robberies.

Investigators identified their vehicle as matching one involved in previous criminal activities, including a recent attempted murder and CIT robbery in KwaZulu-Natal on the 14th of this month.

“The vehicle used by these suspects bears identical characteristics to one spotted at another major crime scene,” stated Lt-Gen Mthombeni. “Our intelligence clearly links this group to the attempted heist and shooting incident in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this month.”
