Five South African Celebrities who are also Sangomas

The journey of many South Africans celebrities is not as easy as portrayed in the media. There are a lot of ups and downs which occur backstage and if these incidents are known they are talked by everyone. Some South African Celebrities have stepped out of this good life in a bid to appease their ancestors and accept their calling so that they can have an easier road.
These are some of the celebrities in South Africa who acknowledged their calling and shared their journey towards becoming traditional healers.

1. Masechaba Ndlovu

The renowned television and former Metro FM presenter is one of the few celebrities who have open about her calling and even shared pictures on social media to show that she has accepted her journey to become a Sangoma. She’s a healer who believes in god, her ancestors, and rooted spiritually because of her spiritual family who appease their spiritual guides.

2. Buhlebendalo Mda

Mda graduated as a Sangoma in 2015. She has released a song called ‘Chosi’, a project she spoke about as her expression of “I am my ancestor’s wildest dream.” Buhle Mda left her lead vocalist position on The Soil to pursue her calling.

3. Boity Thulo

In 2016 Boity Thulo faced a lot of criticism when she revealed that she was a Sangoma. The Rapper, actress, and presenter, clarified the matter to show her fans the difference between ‘Boity, the brand’ and ‘Gogo Boitumelo’. Unashamedly sniff snuff in public, she said her calling was the best thing ever happened to her because she understands that its part of her calling.

4. Letoya Makhene

Generations actress; Latoya Makhene has been open about accepting her spiritual calling and even runs her own practice. She once revealed during an interview with True Love magazine that she once ran away from an initiation school because it was too hard for her. The actress had to put her acting aside at one stage to attend her initiation school, where she spent 8 months learning to be a sangoma.

5. Lerato Mvelase

Singer and actress Lerato Mvelase was once labelled unChristian because of her gift, was shy to embrace her calling because as a Christian she felt it was connected to a Dark Magic. She had the hardest time when she got the calling because she had to leave her family and children behind who she’s close to. However, she said that she had to leave as there was a sense of emptiness in her before she accepted to leave and to go to her training. Today, the actress embraces her gift unashamedly and unapologetically and practising as a traditional healer.
