Five South African Celebrities Who Have Embraced Their Ancestral Calling

Some South African celebrities are deeply spiritual and have embraced their traditional African spirituality and ancestral callings. Below are five Mzansi celebrities who have embraced their ancestral calling:

Dineo Langa

Dineo Langa is a traditionalist who believes in the ancestors so much that she even paid lobola for her husband, muso Solo Langa. The couple tied the knot in 2019 and revealed that they both had to ‘pay lobola’ for one another to join their union in a way that would appease both their ancestors.

Both Dineo and Solo have admitted to having ancestral callings and embarked on the journey of ubungoma (training to become a Sangoma) in 2017.

Dineo said that she was instructed in a dream to lobola Solo. She said:

“A message was conveyed to me through a dream, saying we first had to get our ancestors acquainted with each other. This would, in turn, help them co-exist peacefully going forward. To avoid any friction between the two sides, amadlozi have to pay lobola for each other – although it’s not always given if two spiritually gifted people are in a relationship. One must get direction from their ancestors. I also had to pay lobola to his ancestor.”

Boity Thulo

Rapper Boity Thulo surprised many of her fans in 2016 when she took to social media, revealing that she was set to undergo training to become a sangoma.

The rapper and “Own Your Throne” star said that accepting the call from her ancestors to be a traditional healer is the best thing that has ever happened to her.

Some attacked Boity arguing that ancestors are demons and that being a traditional healer is evil. However, Boity was having none of it and hit back hard at the critics. Said Boity,

If you’re going to try and demonize me for believing in my ancestors and the journey they have placed me on, you’re wasting your time. And stop trying to send me to get reprimanded by White Jesus who claims the people who birthed my family are demons. Asomblief. Thanks.

Gigi Lamayne

Award-winning rapper and songwriter Gigi Lamayne, real name Genesis Gabriella, has revealed that her life has changed for the better after she embraced her ancestral calling.

The rapper left many shocked early this year when she posted pictures on social media in which she was dressed as a Sangoma. Gigi revealed that she had accepted her training to be a sangoma.

Gigi now counsels her social media followers to get in touch with their ancestors and not to neglect who they are as Africans.

Kelly Khumalo

Talented singer and media personality Kelly Khumalo fuelled speculation that she is a sangoma when she posted a picture of herself wearing regalia commonly associated with Sangomas.

In one of the photos in which she is wearing a traditional sangoma cloth and crystal clear beads around her neck, Kelly captioned it,

“Use the power you have been given, Phakama, Nkosazane, Phakama Ndlondlo, Konke kungaphansi kwezinyawo zakho.”

However, when the media reached out to her for comment Kelly said,

“This is none of anyone’s business, I said what I said on my post but it concerns none of you,”

Sometime in 2014, a well known Sangoma said Kelly must become a sangoma or all her future boyfriends would die. The sangoma added that Kelly would not find peace until she accepted her calling, and it seems like the singer listened to the advice.

Noninzi Williams

Playwright and actress Noninzi Williams is best known for her role as Cuba on Rhythm City and she has been practicing as a Sangoma for several years.
