Former ‘Generations: The Legacy’ star Mahlatse Letoka has permanently left the world of acting for a profound new calling within the ministry. The actress, who once graced our screens, has traded scripted lines for scripture, revealing that her time in the entertainment industry was a period of profound personal struggle.

Letoka, who studied drama formally, confessed that she never felt truly at home in front of the camera. The glamour and fame that many aspire to were, for her, sources of immense discomfort and a crisis of confidence.

The Heavy Toll of Fame and Criticism

The limelight, she explains, was nothing like she had anticipated. The constant public scrutiny, particularly on social media, became a destructive force in her life.

“I just wanted to act and not everything that came with fame,” she stated. “People’s comments always destroyed my confidence. I always tried to run away from being there. That is why I would sometimes deactivate my social media account.”

This battle with self-esteem was exacerbated by the nature of the roles she was required to play. Letoka found that the distance between her personal faith and her on-screen characters created an internal conflict that was difficult to reconcile. She felt a constant sense of not belonging.

“When I was an actor, I always felt out, like I did not belong,” Letoka added. “Some of the scenes they made us do felt awkward.”

Despite the challenges of her career, Letoka’s spiritual roots, planted in her childhood in Limpopo, remained. She recalls accepting salvation at the tender age of seven. Although her relationship with her faith wavered during her university years, she never fully abandoned it.

“I went to an art and acting school, and I was introduced to Greek mythology. But I never left Jesus,” she affirmed.

The intense research for a particularly dark storyline, where her character was forced into prostitution, proved to be a final catalyst.

“I had to do research on human trafficking for this role, and it was very heavy for me,” she revealed.

Now, fully committed to her path as a minister, Mahlatse Letoka looks back on her decision to leave acting with absolute certainty. She confirmed she stepped away from the industry several years ago and has no intention of ever returning. For her, the move was not just a career change but a necessary step towards inner peace and her true purpose, finally leaving behind a world where she felt misunderstood.

“I felt that because I was in the entertainment industry, people didn’t take me seriously,” she said.
