A former police officer has been condemned to a lengthy prison term for the brutal rape of a young woman under his care. The Barkly West Regional Court handed down a decisive 15-year sentence to Anthony Sekutinyane, a one-time warrant officer who exploited his position of authority in the most heinous way imaginable. The court heard how the 23-year-old victim was utterly defenceless, locked in a cell, when the man sworn to protect her became her attacker.
The ordeal began on a night in August 2022, after the victim’s mother contacted authorities during a domestic dispute. What should have been a night of safety behind bars at the Barkly West Police Station quickly turned into a nightmare. Mojalefa Senokoatsane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, detailed the officer’s deceit, stating,
“During the night, the accused, who was the shift commander on duty, approached the holding cells and deceitfully informed the victim that he had paid R500 (approximately US$27) bail for her release.”
This lie was the prelude to an unspeakable demand for sexual favours.

A Desperate Stand and a Cruel Assault
When the terrified young woman attempted to call her sister to arrange repayment of the fictitious bail money, Sekutinyane’s demeanour turned violent. He became aggressive and proceeded to rape her within the cold confines of the jail cell. In the aftermath of the trauma, the victim demonstrated immense courage and presence of mind.
She preserved the clothing she wore during the assault, a act that would prove pivotal. Forensic analysis later confirmed a DNA match, irrefutably linking the disgraced officer to the crime and dismantling any chance of him evading justice.
During the trial, Sekutinyane attempted to evade responsibility with a claim that was swiftly dismissed by the court. He alleged the encounter was consensual and that he had merely “joked” about relieving stress through sexual intercourse. The judiciary saw through this feeble defence, recognising a gross abuse of power and a profound violation of the oath to serve and protect. The National Prosecuting Authority has hailed the conviction as a landmark for accountability.

Senokoatsane affirmed,
“The NPA welcomes this sentence, which reinforces the principle that no-one is above the law.” He added, “This sentence sends a strong message that those entrusted with public responsibility will face the full force of the law when they abuse their authority and violate the rights of others.”
