Glen Gabela is best known for his iconic portrayal of a young Shaka Zulu in the 1986 award-winning television miniseries Shaka. From 15 to 19, Glen captivated audiences with his performance, earning a place in the hearts of many. However, behind the glitz and glamour of his acting career lies a story of hardship, loss, and eventual redemption.
Glen Gabela’s Career Before Financial Struggles
Glen’s journey in the entertainment industry began with his breakout role in Shaka Zulu, which catapulted him into the limelight. Over the years, he showcased his versatility by taking on diverse roles in popular shows such as Doubt, Erfsonders, Hopeville, Yizo Yizo, and My Brother’s Keeper. His ability to bring characters to life made him a household name in South Africa.

His most recent role as Pastor Mdletshe in the hit TV series Uzalo seemed like a promising opportunity. He was headhunted for the part and initially assured of a permanent position. However, as the fourth season drew to a close, Glen’s contract was unexpectedly terminated, leaving him in a precarious situation.
Financial Struggles and Personal Loss
The loss of his job had a domino effect on Glen’s life. Without a steady income, he struggled to make ends meet. His financial woes were compounded when the bank repossessed his car and evicted him from his home.
“My bank froze all of my accounts. My car was repossessed, and my apartment was locked,” Glen revealed.
To make matters worse, his personal life was also in turmoil. Glen had been sending money for the upkeep of his daughter, but after losing his contract, his ex-wife decided to raise their child on her own. Tragically, his ex-wife passed away, leaving Glen with a deep longing to mend his relationship with his daughter.
