The former Orlando Pirates forward is now seeking to serve residents beyond the football environment.

Mbuyane has been announced as an Economic Liberators Forum South Africa councillor candidate.

He will contest Ward 67, with his campaign centred on community issues.

His political message carries a simple theme: “The Next Step Is Change.”

For years, football supporters knew Mbuyane for his performances in the famous Orlando Pirates colours.

However, his latest role shifts attention from football success to community representation.

Mbuyane joined Orlando Pirates after making his name at Free State Stars.

He subsequently spent six seasons with the Buccaneers and enjoyed a successful period at the club.

During that time, he contributed to several memorable campaigns and collected major domestic honours.

He also earned recognition at international level with Bafana Bafana.

The former striker made six appearances for South Africa and scored once.

Meanwhile, his personality made him especially popular among Orlando Pirates supporters.

His famous Juju Man celebration became closely associated with his goals and attacking displays.

A different challenge after football

Mbuyane’s relationship with his hometown has remained important since leaving professional football.

The Mamelodi-born former player continued contributing to football through coaching activities after retirement.

He also pursued coaching qualifications while remaining connected to the local sporting community.

Now, however, he is taking his community involvement in a completely different direction.

His political campaign focuses on several concerns affecting residents across the ward.

These include youth empowerment, community development, improved service delivery and safer neighbourhoods.

Consequently, Mbuyane will now face challenges far removed from those he encountered on the football pitch.

His previous public profile could also help him connect with residents and young people.

The Economic Liberators Forum South Africa has backed his bid under its change-focused campaign.

Mbuyane’s football record remains part of the story behind his public profile.

Transfermarkt credits him with 95 league appearances and 19 goals for Orlando Pirates.

National-Football-Teams records also list 116 appearances and 22 goals across competitions.

Nevertheless, his latest challenge will depend on voters rather than football results.

Mbuyane has therefore moved from scoring goals to seeking a role in local leadership.

His journey now stretches from Free State Stars to Orlando Pirates and community politics.

The former Buccaneers star is consequently beginning another significant chapter beyond professional football.
