In a recent episode of the Spotify podcast “What Now?” hosted by Anele Mdoda and Sizwe Dhlomo, South African comedian Trevor Noah delved into his pre-fame life.

He revealed surprising aspects of his journey before becoming a celebrated figure on “The Daily Show” in the US.

Early Ventures: Token Conversions and Electricity Meters

Contrary to the jests from his friends about never having a 9-5 job before his Daily Show tenure, Trevor set the record straight by reminiscing about his diverse employment history. He disclosed,

The first job I had, I worked at a video game arcade, and I was the person who turned your money into tokens.”

Continuing to shatter preconceptions, Trevor shared his experience reading electricity meters for his mom’s business, emphasizing the significance of that role. He humorously added,

Without that, you don’t know how much electricity you’ve used…that was a real job!”

Behind the Wheel: Trevor’s Taxi Driving Days

However, the revelation that caught many by surprise was Trevor Noah’s admission of having been a taxi driver for a year. Recounting his early mornings that began at 4 am and stretched until 9 pm, Trevor highlighted the grit and hard work that characterized his journey before achieving global fame.

From Local Gigs to Global Stardom: Trevor’s Lesser-Known Pursuits

Before gracing the international comedy scene, Trevor Noah had several lesser-known gigs, including hosting “The Real Goboza” on SABC 1 and the sports show “Siyadlala” on SuperSport.

He also made acting cameos, notably appearing on the soapie “Isidingo The Need” and working the graveyard shift at YFM. Additionally, Trevor served as the spokesperson for Cell C, showcasing his diverse talents and experiences leading up to his breakthrough in comedy.
