Germiston Home Affairs Building Set Ablaze in Violent Eviction Protests
The Home Affairs building in Germiston CBD, Gauteng, was set ablaze this morning (12 August) during violent clashes linked to eviction disputes.
The unrest erupted as residents demanded to occupy Pharoe Park flats without paying rent.

Police and Traffic Officers Deployed
Police and traffic officers swiftly responded to the chaos, working to manage the situation and ensure public safety. Witnesses at the scene reported that the fire was allegedly started by protesters using petrol bombs.
Services Disrupted as Fire Guts Offices
The two-story Home Affairs building sustained extensive damage, severely disrupting critical services, including the processing of ID documents and passports. The incident has left many residents frustrated, as these services are now temporarily unavailable.
Minister Vows Legal Action
Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber has condemned the attack, announcing that he will open a criminal case against those responsible.
“We will not tolerate such criminal acts that disrupt essential government services and endanger lives,” Schreiber stated.
Authorities are continuing investigations, and police remain stationed in the area to prevent further unrest.
