KwaZulu-Natal Premier Senzo Mchunu, in his capacity as the chairperson of the provincial council on Aids, has called for a united front against “blessers”.

The term “blesser” is used to describe older men who pay younger women for s_ex.

Mchunu, with Health MEC Sbongiseni Dhlomo and other members of the provincial executive council, embarked on a peaceful demonstration in Mtubatuba on Friday aimed at creating awareness about blessers and illegal abortions.

Mchunu said the province had “declared war on blessers”.

“We have discovered as the province that the so-called blessers are creating havoc in our society and are behind intergenerational s_ex. We must make it hard for blessers to operate from our society as they destroy the future of young girls.

“Young people hold the key to the future, but unfortunately, as they grow, they are increasingly exposed to reproductive health risks such as s_exually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies.”

Mchunu said he hoped to strengthen a behavioural change in young people.
