The government is currently working on a law that will prevent girls from lightening their skins. If the law gets passed, fake yellow bones might face a prison term of not less than 12 month.
According to sources, the Government is deeply concerned about women who lose their real African identify by wanting to have a light complexion.
“This issue was raised three years ago but it was never taken seriously. Beside the health hazards of skin lightening, it also take away that African identity from these women. As government we cannot allow a situation where women are not proud of their natural skin colour. We will arrest them. Black is beautiful,” said a senior advisor to the minister on condition of anonymity.
A study by Professor Nonhlanhla Khumalo, head of dermatology at the University of Cape Town and Groote Schuur Hospital found that most skin lightening products are laced with dangerous substances.
Researchers found that some of these creams contained up to four illegal substances, including mercury, hydroquinone and topical steroids
Reports reveal that celebrities like Khanyi Mbau and Mshoza lead the pack of fake yellow bones in South Africa. It is not clear if they will face arrest should the law be passed.
