‘If you get shot, it will be me’ Kelly Khumalo Faces Public Death Threats Amid Senzo Meyiwa Trial

The singer and TV personality, Kelly Khumalo, has been dealing with backlash from angry social media users, who have been blaming her for the death of her former boyfriend, Senzo Meyiwa. The Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was killed in 2014 at Kelly’s mother’s house in Vosloorus. The trial of the five accused is currently underway at the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

How Kelly Khumalo reacted to the death threat

On Thursday, 3 August, Kelly Khumalo shared her gig guide on Twitter, after being dropped from two music festivals this week. She announced that she will be performing at the Rusty Rocks ‘All For Women’ concert on 12 August, and added that anyone who has a problem with that should vomit.

“12th of August sila engathandi ayiphalaze!” she wrote.

However, one troll responded to her tweet with a death threat, saying that they will shoot her on the day of the event.

“Hy @KellyKhumaloZA please note if ever u [sic] get shot on the day, it will be me,” wrote the tweep, whose handle is @gossipsharer.

Kelly Khumalo did not seem to be fazed by the threat, and simply replied: “Ok Noted”.

Why Kelly Khumalo was removed from two music festivals

While Kelly Khumalo still has some bookings, she has also been losing some gigs due to the public outcry over her involvement in the Senzo Meyiwa case. On Monday, she was removed from the line-up of ‘Tribute To Women’ festival. On Thursday, she was again removed from another event, the ‘Maseru Jazz Festival’.

According to both event organisers, the decision to drop Kelly Khumalo was based on complaints from unhappy audiences who were following the shocking testimonies during the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial. The trial has been going on for three weeks and has revealed some new evidence and contradictions.

Last week, the State’s fourth witness, Colonel Lambertus Steyn – who is a data analyst and investigation officer at the SAPS Cold Case Unit – testified that accused number five (Fisokuhle Ntuli) called Kelly Khumalo’s number twice before Senzo Meyiwa was killed.

However, on Monday, the defence counsel Advocate Zandile Mshololo – who is representing Ntuli – challenged Steyn’s testimony and said that the number was not RICA’d under the suspect.

Steyn also testified that no one in the Khumalo household called the police or the ambulance after Senzo Meyiwa had been shot. He also said that the data on Kelly Khumalo’s phone was wiped hours after the incident.

The five accused are:

  • Accused 1 – Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya
  • Accused 2 – Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi
  • Accused 3 – Mthobisi Prince Mncube
  • Accused 4 – Mthokoziseni Maphisa
  • Accused 5 – Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli

They are all facing charges of premeditated murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of firearms without a licence and possession of ammunition.
