DJ Warras Received Multiple Death Threats Before Being Gunned Down
Johannesburg DJ Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock was fatally shot outside the Carlton Centre in Johannesburg on Tuesday.
Investigators believe the killing was a targeted hit, carried out by three unknown suspects who fled the scene on foot after opening fire.
Prior Threats and Protection Orders
According to Johannesburg MMC for Public Safety Dr Mgcini Tshwaku, Stock had secured five protection orders against individuals who had allegedly threatened him, including occupants of the Zambezi building in the city’s central business district. The fifth protection order had been obtained just last week.
“We believe that a price was put on his head because of the work that he was doing, trying to reclaim that building on behalf of the owner,” Tshwaku told broadcaster Newzroom Afrika.
Footage Suggests Deliberate Attack
Police analysis of video footage from the scene points to a short suspect with dreadlocks as the primary perpetrator. Tshwaku added that the evidence indicates the murder was planned and deliberate, rather than random street violence.
“Warrick was doing the normal thing of securing the building to ensure that people pay. But the building hijackers see that as stopping the income that was coming to them,” Tshwaku explained.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Stock’s death, including the identities of the other two suspects involved in the shooting.
Police are also examining potential links between the murder and the Zambezi building disputes.
