This is the biography of Julius Malema, a South African politician and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president. Early Life and Education
Julius Sello Malema was born on March 3, 1981, in Seshego, Polokwane in the former Transvaal Province. Raised by his grandmother, Sarah Malema, he joined the African National Congress (ANC) at the age of nine. Malema’s early involvement in politics led him to become the chairman of the Youth League branch in Seshego and the regional chairman in 1995. He also became the president of the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) in 1999, leading campaigns for better education and facilities for black students.
Malema completed his education at Mohlakaneng High School in Seshego in 2001. He furthered his studies at the University of South Africa (UNISA), earning diplomas and degrees in youth development, political science, communications, and African languages.
Julius Malema’s ANC Youth League Presidency
Malema gained national prominence as an outspoken supporter of Jacob Zuma, campaigning for Zuma’s election as ANC president. He was elected as the president of the ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in 2008. He became a powerful figure within the ANC, advocating for radical policies such as the nationalization of mines and land expropriation without compensation.However, his relationship with President Jacob Zuma soured, leading to disciplinary issues within the ANC. Malema faced charges for disrupting meetings and making controversial statements. He was ultimately expelled from the ANC.

Economic Freedom Fighters | Formation and Leadership
After his expulsion, Malema remained politically active and formed the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in 2013. The EFF is a radical leftist party advocating for nationalization of mines and banks, land expropriation without compensation, free education, and more.
Julius Malema and EFF in the Elections
In the 2014 general elections, the EFF won 6.35% of the national vote and became the third-largest party in parliament. Malema led protests and disruptions, challenging President Zuma on various issues.
In the 2016 local government elections, the EFF won 8.19% of the national vote and became a kingmaker in several municipalities. The party also participated in protests against Zuma’s presidency.
In 2019, the EFF increased its support to 10.79% of the national vote and became the second-largest opposition party. Malema vowed to hold President Ramaphosa accountable for his actions.
